The Ox
By Zou Zhonghai
The world keeps words of praise in heavy store—
With horns, it will not gore;
With iron hooves, it tramples none;
With strength, it stands to bully none.
A simple handful of withered grass—
It bends its head down low.
One shout, however coarse, will pass,
And under whip-scars, forward go.
Into the ink-wash scroll it goes,
Horns curved like a pale waning moon;
Into the long field-rows,
Its back bears the hearth-smoke of dusk and dawn.
Into rhetoric it steps, displayed
Silent in frames—flesh, blood,
Bone and tears on the butcher’s block arrayed.
All its life, a silent tether draws its way.
Hoofprints fill with moss and weed.
In the world’s thickening book, day by day,
The stream of praise runs on, unchecked—
Yet no hand loosens that one lead.
